We are letting you know that, sadly, we have not been able to find people with the time and energy to keep Wanstead Transition Initiative going at this time.

We hope that the meetings we have had together since we started just over 18 months ago may have inspired or re-connected us with a vision for a more sustainable future, and practical ways to bring that about.

Green Drinks will continue on the first Thursday of the month at The Nightingale pub, Nightingale Lane, from 7.30pm. Sometimes there are just a few people there, sometimes more, usually in the back room. Do come along. That will be an opportunity to meet and share green plans and projects. Who knows, maybe someone or someones may arrive with the dynamism to re-start Wanstead Transition. It is not uncommon for Transition Initiatives to die down and then be resurrected.

A Community Festival With A Green Theme –

Monday, June 4, 2012, 11.30am -7pm – Melbourne Field, Valentines Park, Redbridge

Celebrate the planet, celebrate diversity and celebrate each other at East London’s largest green festival, happening this Bank Holiday Monday at Melbourne Fields, Valentines Park, Redbridge.

Dance to live music playing on two stages (our line up of local performers includes Fuze who supported Mcfly in the Battle of the Bands), be captivated by planet-friendly films screening in our solar-powered cinema, buy fresh vegetarian food from around the world and ethical arts and crafts items from our 100+ stalls, participate in community art activities, including creating a massive planet earth on the grass with natural materials. Make friends with neighbours that you never knew you had.
If you need some Bank Holiday exercise, bring along your trainers and join the world’s oldest marathon runner, 101 year-old Fauja Singh, for a lap of the field.
Take part in an eco-fashion show as a designer or a catwalk model, walk around our eco house and learn how to green up your home, stretch out with community yoga and get Dr Bike to fix your punctures and minor bike problems for free.

Find new treasures at our Give and Take stall (and give away items in good condition that you no longer need), speak to our experts about composting and recycling, gain grow-your-own vegetable skills on our “Riverford” vegetable production line and enjoy Professor Kayoss’ wild one-man environmental show.

Join the head of the London Permaculture network for an introduction to permaculture workshop and if you’re under 5, enjoy our messy play area, be entertained by storytellers, and let your mum and dad learn about environmentally-friendly nappies.

We have two themes: the environment and the community. For us the word ‘green’ includes the planet and the people. It’s the involvement of local residents and groups, with their wide interests and concerns, that makes this event such a success. It is a large and significant community event organised solely by volunteers with all the advantages that grassroots organisations bring: a great atmosphere and a feeling of community spirit, ordinary residents showing their skills and passions, the public interacting and getting involved.”

Wanstead Transition Initiative is at crunch point. We don’t have enough people to sustain the project.
If we don’t find new people with new energy, time and interest it is highly likely that we will fold. If you would like to see it find a way forward, and have something to offer, please come along to the Nightingale on Thursday.
People have expressed interest in communal gardening, and growing local food. There is the possibility of land available. We need people who can help to make it happen.
You will find us in the back room. At the very least, you will find a friendly welcome.

This month we hope as many people will make the effort to come as possible.
A chance to get together to discuss green issues- Hope you all know that it is the conversation and some article of clothing you wear that will be green- not the drinks!!
We want to use these evenings to plan what we all want to do, particularly in terms of growing local food, growing workshops etc.
You may like to know that we will be offering re-usable Wanstead Transition coffee cups for everyone to buy and use to stop the use of throw-away cups that contribute to damaging the environment.
A great chance to meet like-minded people and get something growing.
A special welcome to those who come to us for the first time, maybe through the FoE event.

We showed this film last year and found it hugely inspiring. It shows that modern farming practices, relying heavily on oil, are not sustainable and offers a fresh and exciting alternative for growing food together in areas more like gardens than farms. One with the power to solve the world’s food shortages without damaging the earth.

AND we at WTI have a vision for a community garden in Wanstead. Come along to this evening, find out more and get involved!!
